  • Single Line Collision at Etulia

    Etulia, Roumania - (24/12/1938)

There was a blizzard on this Christmas Eve in Romania when a train carrying troops home on Christmas leave collided on a single line with a local train travelling in the opposite direction. The cause of the accident seems to have been due to the failure of three stationmasters to communicate with an inspector at Galantz regarding the crossing arrangements for the two trains. They were unaware that the normal crossing point of Etulia had been changed to Frecatzei. The stationmaster at this station therefore let one of the trains leave into the path of the other. Ninety three people were killed including a General and two Colonels. A further 147 people were injured in the disaster.
